Linking Product/Application Maintenance and Shareholder Value

Often the investment made in maintaining a product or application provides a poor return-on-investment for the shareholder.  Cistek finds that some of the maintenance practices that contribute to poor shareholder value are:

 

  • The resources assigned to maintenance are often fixed.  Their time is spent working on good things, but not necessarily things that add to shareholder value.
  • Lack of strategic prioritization leads to bugs being fixed that nobody cares about.
  • Enhancements creep in under the radar as maintenance items either with or without the knowledge of product/application management, but without the scrutiny of the capital budgeting process.
